CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

(Note: A child or young person is defined as any person under 18 years)

INTRODUCTION

The Saint Louis Tionól is committed to providing a safe, hospitable environment for all attendees, staff, volunteers, and tutors.

It is vital that all tutors, volunteers, and staff understand their responsibilities to young people and those who are disadvantaged during the course of all activities during the course of the event and at such other times as may be appropriate.

POLICY STATEMENT

• All attendees, regardless of age, gender, race, culture or ability have the right to be safe and healthy during any activity related to the Tionól.

• Young people are welcome in all of our activities and are encouraged to participate to the level of their ability in an atmosphere of respect.

• Tutors and staff must ensure that good practices are followed at all times.

in this context.

• It is recognized that good child protection policies and procedures are of benefit to everyone involved.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

This policy ensures that all tutors, staff and volunteers are clear about the actions necessary with regard to child protection issues.

Its aims are :-

• To raise the awareness and identify responsibility in reporting possible cases of abuse.

• To ensure effective communication between all tutors, staff and volunteers with respect to child protection issues.

• Eliminate situations where abuse of any kind may occur.

• Ensure that the policy is known and followed by all tutors, staff, and volunteers

• Plan activities so that potential for abuse is eliminated

• To ensure that appropriate procedures are followed in the event of an issue of child protection.

PROCEDURES:

1. Ensure that there are no situations where one non-related adult and one child are in an environment that is shut off from or away from others (e.g. a room with a closed door).

2. Maintain appropriate physical distance

3. Trust your intuition if someone is acting inappropriately and bring it to the attention of staff or volunteers.

4. Use verbal affirmation to praise instead of physical touch.

5. In the event an allegation is received, the director must be notified immediately.

6. At all times, the matter must be treated with respect and confidentiality.

7. A written record must be kept of times and persons involved.

8. Appropriate statutory authorities and parents must be notified immediately.
